It has been awhile since I have read a book by Alice Hoffman. This book has reminded me how much I enjoy reading her novels and I need to read more.
Shelby is a young girl who has to deal with the emotional scars of surviving a car crash when she was the driver. Her best friend survived but lives in a coma. She struggles with survivor’s guilt while also dealing with the trials and tribulations of coming of age.
At first, this book was a little awkward because it is written in present tense and reminds me of reading stage directions. However, the strength of the story is only enhanced by this. The characters are strong and easy to like. I found myself moved by the journey Shelby undertakes. I didn’t expect the ending and found the twist a good ending.
I would recommend this book.
