The term weltanschauung is one I had never heard of before this book. It means a particular philosophy or view of life; the worldview of an individual or group. Each of the short stories in this book challenges the reader to see the world from a slightly different angle than what is considered the norm. Each of the protagonists is forced to face a challenge that pushes them out of their comfort zone.
Short stories are often not given the respect they deserve in the literary arena. Yet an author who can master telling a complete and compelling short stories truly understands the backbone from which all longer works of literature are built. More writers (myself included) need to focus more on short stories the way Patis has done. Our writing would as a whole would improve.
My favorite story is “Only If”. This story delves into the mind of a surviving twin who must go on after the other commits suicide. I don’t have a sister or even a brother, but the anguish the surviving twin goes through is so real and relatable. I have two girls who are closer to each other than they will ever be to me. I can only imagine the pain they would go through if this happened to one of them. I read it more than once because it just felt so raw and emotional.
This is Patis first work of fiction and I hope she keeps at it.
