I’ve Got The Moves Like Shakespeare

Last month, I wanted a show to binge on Netflix, because ya know I have nothing else to do. So many people suggested I watch Sons of Anarchy. I watched the first episode and almost threw up. Why? Katy Segal and Ron Pearlman. Katy’s character was the bitchiest woman I have ever seen. She was just plain evil and I had a hard time watching it. Also, in my heart, Ron Pearlman will forever be Vincent from Beauty and the Beast. I made it through the first season. Then I stumbled across a page that spoiled the series finale for me. I wasn’t too upset, though, as I don’t think I would have finished it. I love stories about dysfunctional families almost as much as I love fairies, vampires, and shifters bumping and grinding. However, this show was just too much. I couldn’t stop thinking about it though, especially Sagal’s character. Then it hit me. HAMLET. This show was based on HAMLET. Of course, I Googled it and I was right.

Shakespeare is my most favorite author- EVER!

It made me wonder how many other shows are based on his plays. So here’s what I found:

House of Cards- Richard III

Rise of the Planet of the Apes- Julius Cesar

Lion King- Hamlet

Empire- King Lear

Breaking Bad- Macbeth

I saw some others, but I didn’t recognize them so I didn’t list them. I’m sure there are a ton of movies and I’m not talking about the remakes of the actual plays. There’s a reason Shakespeare’s plays are so eternal. His stories are incredible. I am so in awe of him I named my oldest daughter Miranda after my favorite play The Tempest. And just in case you’re curious my favorite Shakespear movie is also based on this play. Prospero’s Books is my favorite adaptation of this play.

  1. OMG – I never made those connections! And I totally get always seeing Ron Perlman as Vincent – I loved that show. But I also liked him in Hellboy with the cats 😉

  2. I’ve never made the connection, but then I haven’t read a lot of Shakespeare’s work. I know what you mean about spoilers. I watched a programme (name has gone), family of witches, trying to keep a secret, mum daughters and her sister. Anyway, I seen something about the finale and stupidly read it, it completely spoiled the ending so much that I didn’t both watching it in the end.
